One thing that is not being reported by the mainstream media as such but is an issue of a great concern is the VOIP DDoS Attack problem. One thing that is not being reported by the mainstream media as such but is an issue of a great concern is the VOIP DDoS Attack problem. These attacks have become persistent and the volume is increasing with every passing day. As these attacks seem benign, they don’t get much attention by anyone. Most of the times, people are not even aware of them occurring. If you are also someone who has no idea about the DDoS attacks and how they have the potential to harm you and put your privacy at risk, this article holds a lot of information for you! DDoS is basically a type of attack that is done in the cyberspace. DDoS stands for denial-of-service attack. It is a part of the regular activity on the cyberspace, and is considered as quite a harmful cyberattack. It is carried out by making network resource unreachable for the users some time. It is done in the most casual manner possible. The perpetrator basically disrupts the services by the network provider for the time being. The services that the user receives from the host connected with a network are made unavailable. The method of attack is quite interesting. What these cyber attackers have been doing over the last few months is that they fill the web servers with a unlimited requests. Being aware of the fact that a network resource comes with a finite limit to which it can manage the requests, the attackers overload it with requests. Hence, it supersedes the bandwidth capacity, leading to its instant crash. Hence, even the genuine requests do not get through the server then. The infrastructure crashes down, causing a lot of upheaval amongst the internet users. This is what has started becoming a regular activity now. Owing to the increased number of such attacks, all the online businesses have become highly insecure. The inability of the real traffic to reach the site affects these businesses really bad. Eventually, it hinders their ability to make profits, causing a huge panic amongst them. This conscious attempt to make a service unavailable for some period of time is a form of cyber-attack, which is increasing becoming a source of great insecurity for online businesses. The bunch of robots making these attacks are controlled by nefarious elements wanting to disrupt the regular working of an online business. They randomly send out icmp packets to affect the traffic negatively by overwhelming the internet service. With the input requests reaching out of bounds, the output literally freezes. The real people sending out requests to the traffics find it irritating when these requests are not fulfilled. Hence, they are not able to use the VOIP services when required. A few years ago, Amazon was attacked by DDoS and it was a huge deal. People couldn’t get the information across the Amazon website and it caused a great panic. This has happened ten years ago, when the concept of such attacks were new. Now, the attacks have become quite common, increasingly causing regular disruption on the cyberspace. With most of the internet service providers using open platforms to the customers rather than the closed platform of interaction makes it easier for the attackers to plan such malicious activities. It has made more and more service providers vulnerable to these attacks. Alongside this, the attackers beforehand, known as the rebel group, could be a part or the mastermind behind all these attacks, wanting to gain more profit through demand money. However, at the same time, the possibility of another group mimicking the same activity by the Rebel group to scare the cyber space business owners and get money from them. Being on the closed platform for the VOIPs would be a better idea if they want to keep themselves protected from such attacks. However, the shift from being an open to a close platform is not really that easy. It would require them to shift their entire infrastructure. This would cost a fortune. At the same time, it would also limit down the number of genuine people visiting their websites, reducing the profit they earn from the websites. The security would, hence, come with the cost of limiting the number of people actually getting aware of the kind of services they provide. This may be the cost that would have to be paid by the consumer, eventually. Final Thought: However, now the law makers are quite focused towards the issue. They have asked the FBI to get involved into the matter and take the required actions. Though it maybe a little too late to take such actions and have a complete control over the internet space, only the time will tell whether FBI involving in finding out the culprits of the DDoS attacks brings any fruits or not! A spree of DDoS attacks on VOIP service providers continue and now the FBI is involved! Here is Prince Rich and Sunita's thoughts regarding hacker attacks for ransom.
